An “all-encompassing” app for Muslims

Prototyping and Visual Design (In Progress)

“Turba” is a passion project that a friend of mine and I are working to make a reality. Initially, the project started as a personal app I was going to develop and code myself, with the eventual goal being to have it on my own computer, with a basic feature set.

Over time, it became more prevalent that there was a need for an app like this, due to a multitude of apps having some very useful features, but omitting certain features. Oftentimes this meant that users had to have multiple apps that all had the same greater purpose, but certain apps had functionality A, whilst others had functionality B, etc.

It became clear that the app that we were making would need to actually solve these problems, and we would need to conduct research to determine exactly what features would best suit users. However, we had created the initial wire framing and prototyping to be in line with what I was looking for.

Precedent Research

Here are a variety of screenshots that are from different apps, that could be implemented into the application.

“Divine Pearls”

The Divine Pearls app includes secondary supplications that will be beneficial to those who want to read them. It also has a full, digital copy of the Quran, with translation, and transliteration, for those that cannot read arabic. The app also allows the user to set certain supplications as “favourites”, and has a built-in compass to find the direction of Qibla.

The “Turba” app could implement these same features, for desktop, which would couple nicely with the loud-speaker recitation feature.

“Kinship Canada” Donation Portal

Kinship Canada or other donation portal integrations, such as Red Cross or HCI (Human Concern International) directly into the application, with support for tax receipts, would allow for easy and quick donations to those that need it, all without having to leave the app.

“Jaffari.org” Landing Page

The Jaffari.org landing page gives users the daily prayer timings, as well as the islamic calendar and events associated with those days.

The “Turba” App would feature a seamless integration from this website, updated live. In future renditions, other major cities and their prayer times as per local mosques will be integrated as well.

“Nafilah”

Similar to the “Divine Pearls” app, "Nafilah” includes secondary supplications, but has a very clean UI, with high contrast, that would benefit elderly users. Additionally, the app includes secondary times for prayers, further specifying exact times for those who wish to use them.

These high contrast features and additional times are useful, secondary, features for users. High contrast is particularly important for those who may have trouble with vision.

Wireframe 3

This wireframe builds on the previous one, however it makes a better use of space by also including the islamic calendar. At a glance, the most information can be seen from this layout. The dropdown menu remains on the top right, but opens in a window, with a list of options. Those options, when selected, take the user to a setting page, where all features are clearly labeled.

Wireframe 2

This wireframe, inspired by other simple prayer timer apps, includes the mandatory prayer times in the middle of the page, along with a dropdown menu on the top right, with a title bar.

Wireframes

Here are some rough wireframes, that were used to determine the appropriate layout for the application.

Wireframe 1

This wireframe includes the mandatory prayer times on the left, along with a dropdown menu on the top left, and an image, or area for additional information on the right.
